Sergio Carolino
Portuguese Tuba Player and Yamaha Artist Sérgio Carolino made is studies in the prestigious Superior Conservatory of Geneva (Switzerland) with Pierre Pilloud (principal tuba in the Suisse Romande Orchestra ) as well participating in Kurt Sturzenegger's Chamber Music Class.
Sérgio Carolino as attended master classes with some of the most acknowledged masters of today including Roger Bobo, Michel Godard, David Taylor, Æ ystein Baadsvik, Thierry Thibault, Mel Culbertson, Anne-Jelle Visser, Walter Hilgers, Enrique Crespo, Gene Pokorny and Harvey Philips.
His broad and accurate curiosity led him to pursue different styles of musical expression, ranging from the typical classical repertoire to the pure jazz and improvised music, also establishing his reputation as a virtuoso with both standard and contemporary repertoire for the tuba.
He as played principal tuba in many orchestras including the Lisbon Metropolitan (1997-2001), Portuguese Symphonic, Gulbênkian, Remix-Ensemble and several early honors that include the honorable Portuguese Youth Orchestra and European Youth Wind Orchestra.
He is a member of several different ensembles including the “Estardalhaço da Geringonça” ( gadget 's fuss ) CD “ Old Tradition, New Ignition” now “Estardalhaço Brass Band” , “TGB” Jazz trio (CD “TGB tuba, guitar & bateria” ) alongside Mário Delgado (Guitar) and Alex Frazão (Drums), SACALÉ Trio with Bernardo Sassetti (Piano) and Jean-François Lézé (Marimba), “To B'Horn” trio with Bernardo Silva (horn), “Multiphonic Pocket Band” and the Portuguese Tuba Ensemble “ Tubophonia” and the “European Tuba Trio” with François Thuillier (tuba) and Anthony Caillet (euphonium).
Sérgio has appeared as a featured soloist not only in Portugal but also in France , Spain , Germany , Switzerland , Czech Republic , Finland , Hungary , Slovakia and England .
He is constantly on the move as a Yamaha Artist giving Masterclasses and Recitals throughout Europe . Recent places have included the Real Conservatorio Superior de Madrid, Zürich Höchschule für Musik, 2003 Vigo International Tuba Festival, Lieksa Brass Week , Quimper International Brass Masterclass (France), 36º International Horn Symposium (Valencia), Guest Artist in the International Tuba Euphonium Conference ( ITEC 2004 ) in Budapest (Hungary) playing a solo recital, jazz concert with the Budapest Jazz Orchestra and jury member of the Tuba solo artist and Jazz “Rich Matteson” competitions, in the Low Brass Day” at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and in the Birmingham Music Conservatory, in the “6. Brass SEANS” International Festival of Brass in Bratislava ( Slovakia ) and Budapest Hungary ). Future appearances include Melbourne International Festival of Brass MIFB 2006 ( Australia ), the Trinity College of Music in London ( England ), Feeling Musique , Conservatoire du 13 ieme Arrondissement de Paris, Conservatoire de Amiens (France), National Youth Brass Band from Switzerland ( Switzerland ) and the International Tuba Euphonium Conference ( ITEC 2006 ) in Denver, Colorado ( USA ).
Sérgio Carolino is currently preparing two solo recordings featuring original works by Portuguese composers Carlos Azevedo, Jorge Salgueiro, Francisco Loreto, Antero Ávila, Bernardo Sassetti, Carlos Azevedo, António Victorino D' Almeida, Paulo Perfeito, Tomás Pimentel, Mário Laginha, Carlos Marques, and Carlos Barretto. Also Wilhelm von Grunelius (Germany), Iain Masson (Scotland), Roger Steptoe (England), Jean-François Lézé, François Thuillier (France) and Daniel Schvetz (Argentina) Jim Self, Barton Cummings, Hank Feldman, Walter Ross, Mike Forbes, Ben Stapp, Jerry Grant (USA) Elizabeth Raum and David Dahlgren (Canada) dedicate their pieces to himself.
He present positions are Professor of Tuba and Chamber Music in the National Superior Orchestral Academy ( Lisbon ) and principal tuba in Oporto National Orchestra . He is Editorial Advisor in the “ITEA Journal” , published by the International Tuba Euphonium Association.
He plays exclusively with is own mouthpieces collection made by Spanish brass mouthpiece maker Toni Romera , “Romera Brass” and hand made Mutes by Johann Schlipfinger (Austria).
